ENVIRONMENTAL FUNDING: Don't Shortchange The EPF!

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Invest in a greener, healthier New York by investing in the EPF

Background

Established in 1993, the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) is New York State’s dedicated source of funding for critical environmental programs that protect what we love about New York – our clean drinking water, our magnificent parks and our family farms.

But this year, Governor's Cuomo's budget plan calls for investing just $157 million in the EPF -- a figure that falls well short of what is needed to protect New York's natural assets.

New York's leading conservation organizations are asking our members to contact Governor Cuomo and their state representatives, and urge them to make an investment in the EPF of no less than $200 million.

In a year when Governor Cuomo expects the first budget surplus since the 2008 economic decline and investments are being made in many sectors, this is exactly the right time to make investments that will keep New Yorkers working and protect our environment.

And given the EPF reductions during the recent recession, as New York now turns the economic corner it is especially important to restore environmental funding that provides direct benefits across all economic and social sectors in every region of the state.

Help us show Governor Cuomo and the Legislature that the Environmental Protection Fund must be a higher priority by signing our petition below. Thank you!

Protect the Environmental Protection Fund

Dear Assemblymember Sweeney,

I am contacting you today to ask that you increase the level of funding for the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) in the state budget to no less than $200 million.

The current proposed level of funding for the EPF won’t address critical needs that exist across the state for programs that protect our clean water, support good paying jobs, and provide municipalities funding for critical services.

I urge you to address these needs and ensure that there is a sufficient and appropriate level of investment in the environment as part of this year’s budget process, as this funding will benefit the economy and quality of life of your constituents.

In a year when the state expects its first budget surplus since the 2008 economic decline and investments are being made in many sectors, this is exactly the right time to make investments that will keep New Yorkers working and protect our environment.

Thank you in advance for your efforts to conserve our land, air and water, make our communities more resilient and create jobs across New York through your support of the Environmental Protection Fund.
